The academic advising program at Elmira College is designed to assist you in developing and clarifying your educational plans and career goals and assist in fulfilling your degree requirements. 

 

Roles and Responsibilities

The faculty at Elmira College views the advisor-advisee relationship as a developmental one, whereby you will be encouraged to assume greater and greater responsibility for your academic programs. Advisors employ a more prescriptive approach to advising during your first year. Once you declare a major, the advisor focuses on assisting you in developing academic and career plans related to your major. Academic advisors also seek to support your personal growth, as mentioned in the College's mission statement. Every effort is made to place you with an advisor from the academic program of your intended major. While the ultimate responsibility for meeting degree requirements rests with the you, academic advisors provide guidance and support to you as you fulfill these prerequisites and for helping to translate your academic plans into course preferences.

Academic advisors are responsible for:

  • Demonstrating familiarity with the College's general degree requirements and the registration process
  • Assisting you in utilizing information on course offerings and degree requirements
  • Helping you identify and explore potential majors and coursework of interest
  • Assisting you in developing plans to improve your academic performance when needed
  • Setting aside enough regularly scheduled time to meet your advising needs
  • Referring you to other offices and programs on campus when appropriate

Advisors working with students who have declared an academic major are also responsible for:

  • Encouraging you to explore career opportunities and/or graduate programs related to your academic major
  • Assisting you in developing academic and career plans related to your interests and abilities

Students are responsible for:

  • Scheduling and keeping appointments with the advisor at appropriate times during the term and for being prepared for the advising sessions
  • Following through on appropriate tasks after advising sessions
  • Accepting responsibility for academic choices and other decisions
  • Becoming knowledgeable about academic standards, policies, and procedures
  • Becoming familiar with general education requirements and degree programs
  • Consulting with the advisor when in academic difficulty
  • Developing academic and career plans in line with your interests and abilities
